What to expect during your MRI scan

We understand that undergoing any type of scan can be daunting, which is why our dedicated team of MRI radiographers will be with you every step of the way.

The MRI scan will last between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being scanned and how many images are taken. Our wide bore MRI scanner is designed to provide a reassuring environment should you struggle with feelings of claustrophobia.

After the scan is finished a Consultant Radiologist will assess your images and write a diagnostic report. All our radiologists are accredited sub-specialists so you can be assured of receiving an accurate interpretation of your scan.

The diagnostic report will be sent to your referring GP or specialist within a few days of your scan. You will also be given access to our Patient Portal to view your scan images.

Our brand new Siemens 3.0T MRI machine is wide bore - in other words, roomy, You'll also be in contact with our radiographers at all times during the scan.

How long does it take?

Scans last between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being scanned and how many images are taken.

Does it use radiation?

No. MRIs do not use radiation. Instead they use a strong magnetic field together with radio waves.

It's completely painless. Sometimes the scanner will make loud tapping noises - this is just the scanner coils being turned on and off.

Can anyone have an MRI?

Some people can't have an MRI for reasons such as: having a metal implant, being pregnant or having a kidney problem. Call 01962 587821 to discuss.

Can I book myself in?

Yes- if you don't already have a referral from your GP or medical professional, you can get a referral from one of our in-house GPs.
